I originally wrote this a couple hours ago for an attorney consultation, but since writing it even more developments have happened… So please read in it’s entirety, because they are going to stop renting to us tomorrow.
A former co-worker here just told us.
Anyway, we have a little money, just not enough for first months rent + like anything else, security deposit, application and other move-in fees, etc.
We just need a starting point.
We work everyday to make the money we need to pay what needs to be paid.
My credit history is young and nearly maxed out right now from trying to keep our head above water, but I’ve never once been late or missed a payment on anything.
Anyway, please read and if you can help in any way then please reach out.
Thank you very much for your time.
—————————————— In October of 2023 my fiancé and I had to move into a hotel, of which we are still living mid-march.
Sometime around the end of November we were hired on at the same hotel and were given room and board as was customary for employees here at that time.
After only two days of being employed here we learned that people that hired us were suddenly and unexpectedly terminated and replaced.
The entire managerial staff, 2 front desk employees, the housemen, the laundry attendant and 1 of the housekeeping teams.
I say teams because they hire housekeepers in pairs here.
Couples to be exact, so my partner and I were to be paid as one person, at $7 per room, which at two rooms per hour ends up being roughly $14.
00 per hour or $7 per person.
We had been paying over $2k per month for our little room with 2 queen beds before we got hired, but then we were moved to an employee room which is just a room that had been put out of order.
Meaning one problem or another needed to be corrected by maintenance before it could be returned to a rentable condition.
We were at this new room for a brief period before being given one of the 8 studio suites on the property which contained an attached bedroom.
An important note- my partner has two young children aged 6-8 at the time(now 7-9) that she shares 50/50 joint custody of, and for that reason we were approved for the suite by the new management.
This new management consists of two people claiming to be husband and wife.
The male is from India and is the hotel manager, and his female counterpart from Mexico is given rank of housekeeping manager.
Which positioned her as our immediate supervisor.
The first week they took over they treated us fairly well, but she became increasingly dictatorial and began immediately shifting all operations of the hotel to require her authority.
Before now we had never been house keepers.
Zero experience working in hotels at any capacity.
The other two housekeepers on staff are veterans.
A couple from India, they were older and seasoned housekeepers that did the absolute bare minimum to flip the rooms.
They could turn 30 rooms before noon, and we started at 9AM.
Anyway, sorry I’m getting off in the weeds… I’ll try to wrap it up from here quickly.
In January after a month or so employed we were informed that they were going to start charging employees rent.
The employee roster now had at this point 4 new hires, a family from Mexico, 2 of which were placed on housekeeping and were given 90% of our rooms almost immediately.
Our cleaning cart was given to them we had to rummage for an old broken one to use from then on.
Those and many other things done against us were orchestrated to systematically break us down at every level of humanity.
We were quickly ostracized by the whole group with very little encouraging at this point since no one but the managers and us spoke English on the housekeeping crew.
Oh, back to the rent… we were told by management that every employee living at the hotel had to pay rent in this new system, even the managers themselves.
It turns out though, today I was helping the maintenance man pack his things because he was moving out and trying to do so without notifying anyone else he was leaving.
The maintenance man had become very close friends with us by this point.
He was also, even by his own admission, paying rent same as us… But when a piece of paper randomly fell from a cart I was unloading of his belongings I discovered he had been lying to us the whole time.
The paper that I discovered was his most latest check stub which evidenced he had not been paying a dime of rent, and as it turns out we are the only ones that were actually forced to pay rent while everyone else played along that they were too.
I’m not sure what happened to cause these two people to hate us so much.
We were good workers and learning fast, we did everything we could to appease these sadists, but the harder we tried the harsher we were treated.
Until finally one day I had enough when our housekeeping manager laid out an elaborate ruse to make me look like someone who didn’t want to belong or follow rules or whatever.
She waited until I filled out cart for the days rooms to be cleaned.
(We were down to an average of 3 rooms per day at this point, a far distance from the 20 per day average we started with.
) So after I head out to the rooms she apparently holds a meeting without my knowledge and then accuses me of intentionally being absent from the meeting.
Out of nowhere she starts berating me over the walkie talkie while I’m in a guests room changing the bed, while the guest is actually present in the room.
Just listening to this verbal assault I’m taking.
I decided to take a stand at that point since I had a witness and not much left to lose.
I was subsequently suspended, which meant so was my partner.
We did not return to work after the 3 days were up, which in hindsight was probably not the right decision for the long run.
So basically what my question comes down to after all that I’ve told you here is; What rights do we have as renters now? We are considered tenants at this point, correct? They already raised our rent about 25% after only 3 weeks of renting and we see more increases or even worse approaching quickly.
Honestly, they aren’t the only ones that are surprised we haven’t given up yet.
We look at the possibility of complete homelessness just 24 hours away everyday.
We spent everything we saved fighting this custody battle and spend everything we continue to work for just to keep this roof over our head and so my girl can keep her 50% custody of her children.
If we give up now then what was it all for, ya know….
.
So I ask again, what rights do we have? Can they just keep increasing rent until we can’t keep up, or just flat out evict us and tell us we have like 2 hours to gather everything we can and have to leave the rest behind? Do we maybe have some sort of case to file a discrimination suit against them? We have been here about 6 months, we receive mail here, we have paid rent for 4 of the 6 months here, 2 before and 2 after employment.
As sad as it is, this is our home right now.
Not forever but for right now.
Any guidance or assistance is appreciated more than I could ever describe in words.
