The D’Angelico name has long been synonymous with the finest archtop guitars on the planet, and has been recently resurrected though a licensing deal with John D'Angelico's estate.
While these newer models are clearly not original New York D'Angelico's, they are serious, worthy instruments.
This D’Angelico EX-SS 15” semi-hollowbody features an ebony-finished laminated maple top, sides and back.
The body is lightweight, resonant and open, but a solid block beneath the bridge helps restrict unwanted acoustic vibration—giving you the ability to use controlled feedback for increased sustain.
The neck is multi-ply maple/walnut, with an ebony fretboard and large mother-of-pearl block markers.
A pair of Kent Armstrong vintage humbucker pickups produce a wide range of tones, from jazzy rhythms to killer blues leads.
All hardware is plated in black, including the pickups, signature “stair step” tailpiece and Grover Imperial tuners, giving this a sophisticated, black-on-black intensity.
The top, back and “stairstep” tortoiseshell pickguard all feature 5-ply binding.
F-holes are bound, as well.
The split-pediment headstock offers a faithful reproduction of D’Angelico’s iconic original.
The workmanship, features and finish are all excellent, and the quality is top notch.
It’s just not exactly … you know, a real D’Angelico.
